Timber Frame Building Development

Architects and builders are now coming to terms with the benefits which a timber frame structure has compared to concrete.  Timbers lightness and ease of use are not its only advantages.  The production of concrete and steel generates serious carbon emissions, concrete gives off 140 kilograms per cubic metre.

Trees take in carbon as they grow, some supporters of timber frame buildings argue that because they lock in greenhouse gases, the savings could be even greater than the emissions that occur during construction.

Council planning department have waived the requirement for 10% on site renewable energy technology on some timber projects in recognition of their eco-friendliness.

A 9 storey residential tower build in London build entirely from cross laminated timber has had considerable environmental benefits. Using wood rather than conventional materials saved about 306 tonnes of carbon.  As timber has 10 times better heat retention than brick, there was no need for extra insulation.  The project was completed in 49 weeks rather than 72 weeks using concrete and steel and the only heavy machinery required was a crane.
