Airtightness in your home

Airtightness is a vital part of any construction in order to keep energy loss to a minimum and comfort to the occupants high. The main advantages brought by using high insulation and energy efficient heating systems will be lost if warm air leaks out and cold air leaks in. Poor airtightness can attribute to 40% of heat loss from buildings. Currently the airtightness level required in buildings is set at 10m3/h.m2. The loss of warm air can be be caused by wind, air bouyancy and gaps in homes and this in turn can lead to condensation.

Eco Building Systems have been supplying airtightness products for many years and only supply high quality products from companies such as SIGA, DUPONT, ISOVER and DAFA. When using airtightness products in a building, various elements will require different applications such as external walls, ceilings, roofs etc.

Vapour control layers can vary in their qualities but primarily they will all carry out the same purpose: to create an airtight seal and limit the amount of water vapour entering the building. SIGA Majpell 5 is a vapour control layer that can be used on the roof, wall and ceiling structures. This product is diffusible, it has an sd value of 5m and has an intelligent moisture management system meaning it will allow moisture out but not back in. This membrane differs slightly from the DUPONT Airguard Reflective membrane, it has a reflective side which should always face in towards the building, this has the advantage of reflecting the heat generated in the building back into the rooms and due to the qualities it posses it will help reduce any interstitial condensation forming.
